The Weeknd – Twenty Eight (video)

February 13, 2013 Leave a comment

A new self-directed music video for the track “Twenty Eight” has dropped from T-Dot, Ontario’s very own Abel Tesfaye, or as some of you may know him, the guy behind the voice for The Weeknd moniker. This smooth track comes off of one of the three previously unreleased songs found on last year’s Trilogy boxset which included all three of Tesfaye’s mixtapes released in 2011.

A lot of the same Weeknd-music-video-essentials are found here: smoke machines, projectors, stripper poles, lingerie, lighting-play, hazy camera filters, a looming-sense-but-not-quite feel for the noir. Although, this one also does include some titties.

Need I say more? Enjoy.

Nardwuar vs Flying Lotus (Interview Video)

December 10, 2012 Leave a comment

Rogue-journalist Nardwuar approaches experimental Hip Hop producer Flying Lotus to discuss obscure music samples, going to high school with a famous porn-star and FlyLo’s blood connections with legendary R&B/Soul songwriters and Jazz musicians.

For those of us familiar with Marilyn McCleod and John Coltrane, you’d know this man’s music is to be respected when he shares their bloodline.

Mike Skinner & Danny Brown Interview w/ Noisey

Vice’s music channel Noisey has successfully managed to pair up two of my favorite characters in music once again. The ironic thing is I actually favorited a tweet by one of them when these cats initially met one night in London.

The mastermind behind The Streets moniker Mike Skinner and Bruiser Brigade’s Danny Brown have been brought together to discuss their first encounter at a London bar and on-stage hand jobs during shows. Neither topic will let you down, I can promise that much.

This is just the first installment of this interview series so be sure to check out the rest of them as they are released.

Freddie Gibbs Interview/Freestyle w/ Pitchfork

December 10, 2012 Leave a comment

Gary, Indiana’s very  own BFK stopped by for a chat with Pitchfork TV’s Eavvon O’Neal to discuss his recent European tour with Stones Throw Records’ Madlib and TDE’s Jay Rock, as well as an upcoming album with the former, a project with local paisans Str8 Slammin’ Click, and Baby Face Killa‘s successor named Eastside Slim.

Aside from providing the proper title for his collaboration with Madlib (Cocaine Piñata; arguably the most hysterically-dark album name I’ve ever had the opportunity to fall in love with) and a short, impromptu a-capella performance of R. Kelly’s chorus on the song “Hotel”, Gangsta Gibbs blesses us with a freestyle over Erick Arc Elliott’s “Laker Paper”. This is a must watch.

Action Bronson & The Alchemist – Rare Chandeliers (Mixtape)

Bronsolino and Alan The Chemist join forces on the heavily anticipated mixtape Rare Chandeliers. The free cut includes guest appearances by Meyhem Lauren, ScHoolboy Q, Roc Marciano, Sean Price and Styles P.

A full-length collaboration from Ghostface Killah and The Alchemist may never see the light of day, but you can trust me when I say that THIS WILL DO.

I need not even say much about this release.Everybody’s been waiting for these two to get in the studio together since we first even heard “Larry Csonka”.

Kanye West – White Dress

October 12, 2012 Leave a comment

The new RZA-directed film The Man With The Iron Fists released a track from its soundtrack called “White Dress” by none other than Kim Kardashian’s ex-to-be; you may know him as Kanye West. The artist formerly-known as the “Louis Vuitton Don” takes it back to the days of The College Dropout on this cut, where he and and co-producers The RZA, Tapez and Boogz keep the instrumental simple, neat, and nostalgic. Also reminiscent of the past is Kanye’s lyrical contribution, where he’s as funny as the 26 year-old who anxiously awaited the critical reception of his debut LP with an album-closing line like “Killin’ ya’ll niggas on that lyrical shit / mayonnaise-colored Benz / I push Miracle Whips”, but instead smerks “You like piña coladas / getting caught in the rain/ or rocking flannels all summer like Kurt Cobain”.

This commonly-wedding-related attire, “White Dress”, and references to a specific person’s idiosyncrasies, might even make you think he’s actually talking about marrying….. WAIT. NO. DON’T DO IT.

Killer Mike – Reagan (Music Video)

October 3, 2012 Leave a comment

Off his stellar album R.A.P. Music, Killer Mike releases a video for his standout track “Reagan,” which is not just one of my favorite tracks on the album, but of the entire year.

The animated-short provides visuals for Mike’s sermon-esque point of view on how he feels about the deceased, former-actor-turned-conservative-political-figure Ronald Reagan and his tenure in office as the President of the United States of America, the War on Drugs, racism, the state of the African American community, and hip-hop’s influence on negative vices in popular culture.

Killer Mike is by no stretch “easy on the eyes,” which contrasts most pop music artists (this includes multi-million dollar recording artists like Kanye West, who can still sell an image worth purchasing, despite a lack of “sexy” thereof, by today’s standards), so the direction Mike and directors Daniel Garcia and Harry Teitelman took was perfect. They present to you a cartoon, the easiest form of visual information we’ve grown to understand as humans (as early as childhood), displaying images of the all-seeing eye atop a pyramid in the center of an American flag, numerous references to the 666 satanic number, the exploitation of material possessions, sex, drugs, weapons, gangs and crime, political corruption and police brutality.

All things aside; Killer Mike is one of a handful of artists on the face of this earth who are anywhere near familiar to what is really  going on in this country. You can believe what you want, but the fact is, the Reagan administration created, provided-for and financed both ends of the “War on Drugs” and never managed to win it, the Clinton administration allowed banks to approve sub-prime financing to a country full of people whom were the equivalent to horny men leaving a strip club with over-drafted bank accounts, the W. Bush administration proceeded with the second war in Iraq despite being told not to by the United Nations Security Council, therefore making their actions illegal and indictable as war crimes, and the Obama administration…we’re still in the process.

Kendrick Lamar – Art of Peer Pressure

September 25, 2012 Leave a comment

Kendrick Lamar leaks another track from his highly-anticipated major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city named “Art of Peer Pressure“, produced by Rune Rask of the Danish Hip Hop act Suspekt.

Another creative introspective track by Kendrick that reflects on negative influences like alcohol, drugs, violence and womanzing, which Lamar has famously been known to shy away from. The song follows suit in a string of hot tracks released by Kendrick en route to the drop of his forthcoming LP, as the quality is kept high both lyrically and  production-wise with Rune leaving us a beat reminiscent of what Organized Noize and Earthtone Ideas were conjuring during OutKast’s ATLiens sessions.

Check the track below and remember to show support and purchase your copy of good kid, m.A.A.d city when it drops on October 22nd.

Interview: Nardwuar vs Big Sean (Video)

September 18, 2012 Leave a comment

Rogue journalist Nardwuar blesses us with another interview with G.O.O.D. Music member Big Sean.

To be quite honest with you, the Human Serviette dishes us the usual goods (no pun intended), but it can’t go without saying that Big Sean lacks a whole lot of personality in this video. I mean, he’s as bland as eucharist for a non-Christian throughout 99% of the whole discussion altogether, which doesn’t really surprise me, seeing as though I feel the same way about his raps too.

I know many of you might say the same thing about Nardwuar’s interview with 2 Chainz, but let’s be real; Tity Boi is TWICE as interesting (i.e. his musical history, interest in real estate and college background) as Big Sean is in more ways than one.

I’m sorry, but I have to say it: Big Sean suffers from Too-Much-Swag Syndrome. Some people are just WAY too cool to be appreciated.
