Interview: Robb Bank$

The little homie Robb Bank$ has been doing his thing the past year with the release of his debut solo mixtape Calendars. He opened up for Stalley a few weeks ago and is preparing to drop his second mixtape YOTS (Year Of The Savage) later this year. With that said you know I had to see what was up with Robb. I got a chance to kick it with him for a few to see what’s up with him and how things have been going since the release of Calendars and talk growing up, the mixtape and, of course, comparisons to A.$.A.P. Rocky. Here’s a sample of my Broward-Palm Beach New Times piece “Robb Bank$ Thinks He May Be Happy”………

“It wasn’t like I was in and out of jail or some shit,” said Bank$. “I would never lie about that shit. It is what it is. If you down here and a nigga try you, fuck you going to do? You got to show the nigga what’s up.”

What was originally meant to be an EP, Calendars released in mid-February after multiple set backs, turned into a 14 track mixtape thoughtfully drawn from personal experiences that has turned many heads in South Florida.

“Calendars is everything that’s happened to me from the last three years,” said Banks. “From bad break ups to I fucked this nigga up to this nigga fucked me up, my homeboy died, this happened, that happened.”

Drake Going at Drake and David Getta? Really?

April 25, 2012 Leave a comment

So I got work that Wheelchair Jimmy may have taken a little shot at Miami’s own Mr. 305 and David Guetta by saying their music lacks integrity.

Drizzy told NME Magazine, “For me, the David Guetta stuff just doesn’t work,” he said. “I don’t really wanna go there. There’s other artists, that’s their sound. They feel in order to thrive internationally that they gotta do straightforward, four to the floor, David Guetta, Pitbull music.”

Really? Just like Heartbroken Drakes “raps” about women that he’s cried about in the past because he makes him money, Getta and Pitbull make their brand of music because that’s their forte. That’s what their fans love. I will be the first to admit I didn’t fully appreciate the transition Pitbull made from how he rapped early in his career to the dance music he comes out with today. But now, I’ll jam to it. And besides Rick Ross, Pit has been holding it down for South Florida on a more international level.

Also, hasn’t Nicki Minaj collaborated with Guetta a couple of times? What’s next? Are you going to say her music lacks integrity as well? And I’m pretty sure Drizzy’s latest song with Rihanna is pretty close to a dance record. Hell….IT IS A DANCE RECORD!!! If I can fist pump to it then it’s a dance record. Period.

I’ve said before that I believe Wayne gave Drake his left over drugs when he went to prison, and after trying to sneak diss Ludacris and Common combined with this, it doesn’t seem like I’m too far off.

Took me a while to finally get this one done, but it finally is. Adding to the continuous growth of the hip-hop/rap scene in West Palm Beach, which I personally believe is underrated, is Muzik Jones Drew. This dude has some talent both in and out of booth. At 25 years old, Drew has already staked his claim as one of the go-to-guys in WPB. Here is a sample of my piece “Muzik Jones Drew’s Music Love Jones Makes Him the Man to Know in West Palm Beach,” (long title, I know), where he talks about his first beat program, working with up-and-coming WPB rapper 1Hot and a pretty funny Los Angeles trip…..

There would be nights I’m like up till 3, 4 in the morning with headphones on, because after 12, I’m getting yelled at,” said Penn. “Everyone is telling me to turn the music down and stuff like that. I’m just in my dad’s office producing till I’m tired.”

His beats would eventually be used by his younger brother, Dexter, an aspiring rapper.

“My first beat I made probably would’ve never got used,” said Penn. “I would’ve still been some dude in his parent’s office just pumping out tracks for nothing.”

But in 2007, Dexter was sentenced to six years in prison for kidnapping. The arrest would become the reason for making the transition of music being a hobby into a future livelihood.
